5 Reasons to Love Natural Light Wedding Photography

BlogWR-EmilyLordPhoto-4.jpg

I’ve had this blog in my drafts for a while now. I’ve been worried that other wedding photographers would look at it and think I’m crazy and inexperienced.

Yet my experience tells me this is a choice that I love and stand by.

I’ve shot evening wedding receptions in great light and poor light. Each time I discover photos that take my breath away. They are some of my favorite wedding photos ever. This took me by surprise because I usually delight in warm, golden light.

Shooting in existing light pushes me to my technical limits but I LOVE the results. Plus, I want to keep learning and getting better. I’d love to find other natural light wedding photographers, follow their work, and learn from them. I recently learned about calibrating dark photos that look crisp on screen but a little too black when printed. There’s always a new camera and trend to get behind, like going mirrorless might help in the future.

I hope to find some couples who love the romantic look and feel of natural light. I’m willing to travel anywhere if we are a stylistic match meant to be.

Below are 5 big reasons you might fall in love with natural light wedding photography:

  1. You love the look and feel of old family film.

Plus, cameras are so good these days the grain only comes out if there is extremely minimal light.

2. You prefer warm skin tones

Natural light is like warm, buttered toast. If you know, you know.

3. It’s Easier to Sneak a Peek at Tender Moments

Perhaps my favorite perk - no bright flash in anyone’s faces!

4. You Love Black and White Edits

MY GOODNESS natural light photos look timeless in black and white (plus I always include color originals).

5. Campfires, Sparklers, Lanterns, Candles, Chandeliers, Fairy Lights…

Need I say more? Natural light photographers will emphasize all the fun ways you bring light to your wedding reception.
